ANYONE CAN HEAL; JUST TRY!
In the typical spiritual experience today most Christians don’t try to do anything more than anyone else does. Although upon becoming a Christian they accept to follow Jesus, they don’t really do more than give a mental assent to certain concepts; and that’s all. For example: “Go to church sometimes, give offerings as you can, and hope that there really is a Heaven coming someday. But as for doing the things that Jesus did, well, that was for Him back in His time; people today aren’t really to think of doing those things.” It’s because this attitude has become so widespread that Christians can no longer do the things that Jesus once enabled them to do.
But consider: just because Christians in general have stopped doing something, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t do it or can’t do it. Jesus gave the commission to His followers to do the miracles that He did, and He made available the power to do so. But over time, and through lack of practice, Christians have lost the knowledge of how to work miracles. They then began to ignore or speak badly of those things they could no longer do. But this doesn’t change the fact that Jesus expects us to do as He did.
I assure you that anyone can do these things if they only believe enough to try. You just need to believe in Jesus’ love for you and accept the thought that He is willing to share power with you so that you can have a happier life. Further, it isn’t the case that only a few certain people are given greater skill and responsibility than others. Everyone has the potential to do even greater things than Jesus did.
At first you may feel a bit self-conscious about attempting to do these things. But I invite you to consider a couple of points. How many people will you help if you don’t even try? None; of course. How about if you do give it a chance and you end up healing a few? Isn’t that more people helped than if you didn’t even make an attempt? So, every success represents someone helped who wouldn’t have been otherwise. And those times that you try but don’t succeed, this adds to your experience and helps you in the long run. In other words, your successes show you that this power really is available; and your non-successes stimulate you to learn more about how it works so you can help others more consistently.
Lest you fear being presumptuous, please know that Jesus gives His approval. Trying to do these things even when you’re new at it is mentioned in the Bible. Jesus’ disciples were walking down the street when they saw someone who wasn’t one of the Twelve trying to do what he had seen Jesus do. And he was having a bit of success, even though he wasn’t a regular disciple. One of the Twelve told the man to stop, then went to report him to Jesus. But Jesus wasn’t upset with this; instead He was glad that other people were willing to try. We find this account in Lk 9:49 and also Mk 9:38-39, “Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbade him, because he followeth not us. But Jesus said, ‘Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name that can lightly speak evil of me.” This shows Jesus’ willingness for everyone to try it for themselves.
So again, we invite you to study and learn along with us. Together we can find again the knowledge, the skills, and the abilities that our God desires His children to possess and use. It’s time for “Christians” to live up to their name, and fulfill their potential.
