Elegy for Dad

8/26/12

Still callow I was when by Death we were parted.
The full flame of courage not yet seen to burn.
I’d not found myself; on my way hadn’t started.
But Life threw me into the pool and said, “Learn!”
I needed your strong, gentle touch further years.
But quit of your heart I was emptied of tears.

Though clearly deficient of high education;
Not perfect or classy; you had a few flaws.
But always content with your life and your station,
So wise in your ethics, and true to your cause;
That all whom you knew held respect, deemed you great.
Beheld of a stature most rare here of late.

I now see myself follow suit in your manner.
I know by this sign you are still here with me.
The next generation shall soon raise your banner.
My son studies all that I do faithfully.
He now reflects me, just as I mirrored you.
Thus you are embodied and living anew.
