“Mom, why are you so opposed to my marrying Jenny? She tries really hard to be nice to you, but it seems you can’t stand to look at her. Why?”
“Yes, she behaves well enough. But what do you know of her parents? Of her father?”
“Her mother is nice. She raised Jenny alone though. Her father went to prison when Jenny was an infant. He died a few years later in a fight with other prisoners.”
“See? He was a violent man. And his genes have been passed to her. Isn’t that reason enough?”
“No. She can’t help what someone else did. And there’s no saying that she’ll be the same as him.”
“Do you know what he did?”
“No. Jenny hasn’t told me. I’m not sure she even knows.”
“Well, I know what he did. He violently raped a girl then tried to kill her. She only survived by a miracle. But the attack left her impregnated.”
“Was that Jenny’s mom?”
“No, of course not. It was a different girl. Then he wasn’t caught for two years. By the time they found him he had married Jenny’s mother.”
“Still, what’s that got to do with us?”
“A nice man took pity on the girl who’d been raped. He married her then helped raise you until he passed away.”
“Dad?!”
“Son, you can’t marry Jenny because she’s your sister.”
