Yuletide

This is what Christmastime means to me,
This is what holidays bring.
Young hopeful faces that shine with glee,
Beautiful voices that sing.

The sounds of constantly-playing songs,
With words that you once knew,
Unite with seasonal-angst cartoons,
And mushy movies too.

Trees bright with light strings and ornaments
Attend to bolster bliss.
While mistletoe abets paramours
Who hope to steal a kiss.

This is what Christmastime means to me,
This is what holidays bring.
Furnaces warming a chilly eve,
Romantic lovers who cling.

A funny hat or a silly tie,
To show your sense of style.
While reindeer horns and some angel wings,
Shall make the children smile.

An hour of caroling through the town
Will warm your heart anew.
Then gingerbread and hot chocolate
Can heat your stomach too.

This is what Christmastime means to me,
This is what holidays bring.
Parties and dinners and tete-a-tetes.
Laughing until your eyes sting.

Exchanging presents with kith and kin;
Just cards with those who won’t.
Nice gifts for people you really like;
And, even those you don’t.

A minor squabble about how long
To let the turkey bake.
And then another about who likes
The egg nog or fruit cake.
